Hey Sandi, I just wanted to share my thoughts. You say, "That’s something that saddens me in stories and real life- why do these girls put themselves through this trying to be “popular”?" I agree. Why do girls do this to themselves? You know that Oprah did a show about this topic and she urged parents to not allow their teenage daughters to read these books. I think "Pink" was the guest star that day. Well, after seeing it on Oprah, I had to read the book for myself to see what the hype was all about. So, I borrowed the first book from one of my writing club girls and read it very quickly. I would never discourage a student from reading something they want to read, however I think this is one I would have to discuss with my daughter if she were reading it. There is one line in it that stands out to me, I can't remember it word for word, but it was something like, "It is better to lie and fit in than to tell the truth and be a loser." I don't think this is the message I want my soon to be teenage daughter to hear. The entire book was Claire trying to fit in to Massie's group. At they end, they hide out behind the flowers and become friends. When the flowers are no longer there to hide them, their friendship is hidden. Hmmm. Is that what friendship really is? Definately chick lit for the middle school crowd. Reminds me a lot of the Sweet Valley High books that I read in middle school.
